The first flight from Turkey’s new Istanbul Airport will be made by Turkish Airlines (THY) to Turkey’s capital, Ankara today. The new airport, built at a cost of $11 billion will be the world’s largest airport.
Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport will soon end commercial flights but will kept as a venue for international fairs, in particular, aviation events. The grounds surrounding the airport will be redesigned as a public garden as planned.
The opening ceremony was held on Monday led by President Erdogan. Over 50 foreign dignitaries attended the event, including President Mustafa Akinci and his Minister for Tourism Tolga Atakan.
Turkish Airlines will fly to Antalya on 1 November and to Izmir on November 2 with the first international flight to the TRNC on November 1.
