The abundant rainfall has filled up all the reservoirs in North Cyprus, Director of the Cyprus Turkish Water Board Nazife Yilmaz has said. She added that the board was pleased to see the high volume of rain water collected in the reservoirs.
Ms. Yilmaz said that plans to expand and enlarge the existing reservoirs were being made, to supply more water for agricultural use.
“Our greatest goal this year, is to deepen and clean the reservoirs, as well as to repair damage to the dam walls that has occurred over the years”, Yilmaz added.
The Water Board says that currently, there are 17 small lakes or reservoirs with a capacity of 16 million tonnes. There are an additional 20 reservoirs that feed underwater reserves to a capacity of 20 million tonnes.
The director pointed out that many dried up reservoirs had been filled by the torrential rainfall this winter, one of which was Haspolat Lake.
She added that Gemkonagi Madendere, Akdeniz, Arapkoy Uzundere, Dagyolu Ucparmakdere, Yilmazkoy Polatdere reservoirs as well as the Gonyeli and Guzelyurt reservoirs were all full.
