The Presidency has called on the government to accelerate its efforts regarding the Derinya border crossing that is foreseen as opening on 1 July and the Aplic crossing on 15 September.
Presidential spokesman Barış Burcu has stated that President Mustafa Akıncı has called on the government to take the necessary steps immediately to complete the north’s side of the Derinya and Aplic border crossings so that the Turkish Cypriot side can not be blamed if any further delays are experienced.
“As you know, the President had asked for opening dates of the Derinya and Aplic border crossings from the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades prior to their meeting on 16 April. During their meeting, Mr. Anastasiades said that the Derinya crossing could open on 1 July and the Aplic crossing could be ready by 15 September. Our President has shared this information with the government and is calling for immediate steps to be taken, so the Turkish Cypriot side can not be blamed if the openings are delayed”, the Presidential spokesman said.
Burcu also said that President Akıncı had personally telephoned Finance Minister Serdar Denktaş and called for the tender process to begin in the shortest time possible.
