President Mustafa Akıncı leaves for New York tomorrow to meet with UN-Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He will meet with Guterres on Saturday 29 September. President Akıncı flies from Ercan Airport at 08.40 am tomorrow.
President Akıncı will hold a press conference at Ercan Airport before his departure. He is scheduled to meet with UN Secretary-General Guterres on Saturday afternoon and will hold a number of high-level bilateral meetings during his time in New York.
The president will be accompanied by his wife Meral Akıncı, the presidential spokesman Barış Burcu, Special Adviser on Diplomacy and EU Affairs Erhan Erçin and the president’s Chief of Staff, Cenk Gürçağ.
Former Prime Minister of Portugal, Antonio Guterres, (69) who began his five-year mandate in January 2017, temporarily commissioned US diplomat Jane Holl Lute, to make an assessment of grounds to restart the Cyprus negotiations by meeting with all parties involved.
In a recent press conference, Guterres said that Lute, as his temporary special adviser for the Cyprus problem, has been continuing her work on Cyprus. I am as interested in her report as you are, he said.
Additionally, UN Secretary-General Guterres’ Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, met with President Mustafa Akıncı and Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades before going to New York.
