Akinci Holds Second Meeting with Lute

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akıncı, held a two-hour meeting with Jane Holl Lute, the UN Secretary-General’s temporary Special Adviser for Cyprus. The president had spoken to Mrs Lute yesterday, before she met Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades. Following the meeting at the Presidency, President Akinci’s spokesman Barış Burcu made the following statement:

Mr President discussed whether there is a common understanding between Mrs Lute and the two sides in a meaningful way in order to make a meaningful start to the negotiations. Today, President Akıncı reaffirms that the acceptance of our political equality as the Turkish Cypriot side is a ‘sine qua non’ for the envisaged solution and stresses the importance of giving examples.”

He went on to say that the Turkish Cypriot side has maintained a consistent and constructive dialogue with Mrs Lute in order to create common ground and maintaining its commitment to past resolutions.

Burcu said: “In any federal solution, it is very clear that there can be no majority and minority relations. The political equality of Turkish Cypriots and their active participation in the decisions are fundamental. Loyalty to this principle and to past agreements is indispensable for a successful completion of of the task. In the coming days, the President will first come together with the government and then call the Assembly for a meeting in the near future”.

Mrs Lute was scheduled to meet with Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades at 16.30. today.
