Work on the new terminal building at Ercan airport is progressing and completion is expected by 2020.
Installation of the airport’s eight-passenger boarding bridges is expected to start as of next month.
President Mustafa Akıncı accompanied by Minister of Public Works and Communications Tolga Atakan, visited the new airport yesterday and was briefed on the work being carried out.

After he inspected work at the new terminal building, President Akıncı said that the biggest goal was to launch direct flights to and from the TRNC via the new airport.
“Since we live on an island, air transport is extremely important for us. We lag behind in terms of sea transport. We need to develop our infrastructure if we are to improve means of air transportation. That is why the new terminal, runway and expansion of the old runway projects at Ercan are extremely important”, the President said.
Akıncı said that the new terminal, once opened, will be able to provide services catering for between 5-8 million passengers.

Pointing out that once a settlement is reached, Ercan airport will be open to international flights, Akıncı said that Ercan will operate with the same status as Larnaca airport in South Cyprus.
The new Ercan airport covers an area of 1,800,000 m² and the new terminal building once completed will be four stories high covering an area of 128,000m².
The new airport will also have a four storey parking space spanning over an area of 40,700m².
The airport’s runway will be 3,200m in length and the current runway at the airport which is 1,700m will be expanded to the same length as the new runway.
