Mustafa Akıncı, who will be running against incumbent President Dervis Eroglu in the second round of the TRNC Presidential elections told the Associated Press that the voting result was a turning point.
“I’m convinced next week’s results will be a win for all those who want peace in Cyprus and a better future not only for Turkish Cypriots, but for the whole island,” he said.
Akıncı supporter Mine Yücel said Akıncı’s convincing results at the ballot box, stemmed from the increasing wish of many Turkish Cypriots for change, not only on how the Cyprus negotiations are conducted, but how a whole raft of economic and social problems should be tackled. “This was meant to be an election for change,” said Yücel.
Seasoned politician Mustafa Akıncı, has spent more than half of his 67 years in politics. He is very popular with left-wing voters and strongly supports the island’s reunification under a federal roof.
