President Akinci has sent a message of support in the social media regarding the arrest of prominent Turkish journalists Can Dundar and Erdem Gul of the Turkish daily ‘Cumhuriyet’.
In June, Turkish President Erdogan’s lawyers filed a criminal complaint against Dundar with the Ankara prosecutor’s office. Charges included espionage and “falsifying footage and information” in an attempt to bring down the Republic of Turkey and prevent the state from carrying out its duties, Anadolu News Agency reported.
In his message, Akinci expressed his solidarity towards Dundar and Gul. He wrote: “It is essential to be human, to have the right to report on democracy, human rights, thoughts and the freedom of expression. Above all, I am a human being and I express my solidarity with Can Dundar and Erdem Gul and to all the journalists who represent the name of the freedom”.
