Akinci warns against eroding democracy in Turkey

On the one year anniversary of the failed coup attempt in Turkey on 15 July, President Akıncı stated that the attempted coup was prevented by the courage of the Turkish people.

They came on to the streets upon the call of President Erdogan and defeated the coup. “The civilian population is a major cause of resistance against tanks with flags”, he said.

Speaking at the 15th Commemoration Ceremony held in Nicosia, President Akıncı conveyed his respects to the veterans and emphasised that the most important force against the coup is the power of democracy and rule of law:

It is very important for us to distinguish the accused from the innocent people and to separate the slanders of those who have true knowledge and those with dark ambitions.

“These are the times when it is difficult to talk about these issues, but if you are not careful, democracy will be eroded.”
