Alakopru Dam in Turkey nears completion

The Alakopru Dam in Amanur, Mersin, which is being constructed to supply water to North Cyprus is 75% complete.

According to the project manager, Ali Cakmak, the wall of the dam will be completed within two weeks.

The Turkish government paid TL67 million for the purchase of the land and new homes are being built for the families who had to vacate the area which is now the site of the dam.

The ‘Project of the Century’, the first of its kind is intended to supply the TRNC with 75 million cubic meters annually to Gecitkoy Dam via a 78 kilometer pipeline. 15 million cubic meters of the water will be used for domestic consumption and 60 million cubic meters is for irrigation.
