President Nicos Anastasiades underwent open-heart surgery which was completed late Tuesday evening, ‘Cyprus Mail’ reports.
The South’s government spokesman, Nicos Christodoulides said that the operation, which was performed in Mount Sinai Hospital in New York went well. He added that the President had been eager to get the operation over and done with.
Late Monday evening, Vice-President Joe Biden telephoned Anastasiades to wish him a speedy recovery as did US ambassador to Cyprus John Koenig.
The president was accompanied to New York by his cardio surgeon Marinos Sotiriou, who attended the operation. The procedure to repair the mitral valve was carried out by Dr David Adams, an expert on the process.
President Anastasiades is expected to return to Cyprus before Christmas.
