Anastasiades returns – impasse in talks remains

Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades has said that Turkey’s attitude regarding the resumption of the negotiations is not only unsatisfactory but also adds to the existing problems, ‘Famagusta Gazette’ reports.

After chairing his first cabinet meeting following his return from New York after heart surgery, he told the press that he would not tolerate partners who undermine the existence of the Republic of Cyprus.

“I would like to make clear that I will never tolerate partners to a state which are not active but instead make threats with new plans,” he stated.

The Greek Cypriot President abandoned talks with Turkish Cypriots in October in protest at what he called attempts by Turkey to undermine gas exploration off the island.

Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot government have denied that this was their intention.
