Anastasiades: No talks just for the sake of talking

Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades says he will not bow down to UN pressure to begin a dialogue on the Cyprus problem.

Instead he has called on Turkish Cypriots and Turkey to take bold steps to help the establishment of trust.

Before authorising any negotiations, he wants a joint statement in place, that will emphasise single sovereignty, single international representation and single citizenship, he says.

He added that otherwise, the negotiations will be a “dialogue of the deaf” and that he needs to set these conditions to honour the heroes who sacrificed themselves to reach a solution.
