President Nicos Anastasiades has won a second term as president having won the majority of votes in the election run-off on Sunday.
Voter turnout was 73 percent.
Defeated presidential candidate Akel backed independent Stavros Malas, called Anastasiades to congratulate him.
“The people have spoken and their decision is respected. I would like to congratulate Nicos Anastasiades with whom I have already spoken.”
“I would like to wish him good work ahead of him and to look after Cyprus. I also congratulate candidates that were in the first round, particularly Nicolas Papadopoulos (Diko leader) and Giorgos Lillikas (Citizens’ Alliance leader) for their contribution towards democratic debate.
“I know the result has disappointed you but we have to respect it. We fought an honourable battle”, he said.
To those who supported him, he said he will feel grateful to them for the rest of his life.
Malas thanked his family, wife and children who fought for him and paid their own price.
