Protesters formed a human chain on Ledra Street in the UN buffer zone on Wednesday. Around 250 members of both the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communies linked arms in protest against the construction of the nuclear power plant being built at Akkuyu, Mersin district.
The plant, which is being built in a region of seismic activity, presents a grave threat to the island in the event of an accident, they say.
Many Turkish Cypriots know the risks and are against the construction of the power plant but it is up to their leaders to speak out, Şener Elçil, General Secretary of the Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ Union (KTOS) said.
The South Cyprus government should call on the EU to address the issue with Turkey, Greek Cypriot Charalambos Theopemptou said.
