A statement of support for Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika was issued yesterday by Communal Liberation Party- New Forces (TKP-YG) leader Mehmet Cakici. While expressing the party’s support for Turkey’s Armed Forces operation in Afrin, he also commented on the attack against press organs in North Cyprus. Turkish President Erdogan had issued a statement encouraging a backlash by citizens in the TRNC against a headline published by ‘Afrika’ on Sunday. Cakici said that that this was wrong and dangerous.
“As a party which supports the freedom of press, we strongly condemn the attack against Afrika newspaper and we find the attacks to be wrong and separatist”, Cakici said, adding: “The attacks that took place at Afrika newspaper offices were not a protest action; it was an attack aiming to shut them up. This attack is at the same time an attack against the freedom of the press, the freedom of speech and democracy. We will continue supporting and promoting with our stance, the efforts for peace, democracy and freedoms of speech and press in the country”.
Meanwhile a “Peace and democracy march” will be held next Friday afternoon in North Lefkosa.
The march is being organised by the Platform of Trade Unions as a reaction to the attacks against Afrika newspaper (formerly known as Avrupa) and the events took that place in parliament against CTP deputy Dogus Derya, when another MP threw a handful of papers at her head.
