Bafra waste water treatment plant and the poor condition of the sewage system, have been causing environmental damage and health hazards for the past five months.
The plant, a major tourism investment, which was opened in 2007, was functioning well until five months ago. Since then, it has been causing pollution to the local area and creating offensive odours because the both the plant and sewage system have been neglected. It is also linked to “unlawful tendering and management license” issues.
The locals in the village are very concerned about the health hazard and have demanded that the plant come under new ownership. Bafra village mukhtar said they had appealed to the Forestry Department and Environment Department several times and had simply been fobbed off.
