Ban and Anastasiades agree confidence building essential

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on South Cyprus President Anastasiades to maintain the current momentum in the Cyprus negotiations which restarted in February, a UN spokesman has said.

President Anastasiades met with Ban Ki-moon in Brussels on Wednesday and the spokesman said that they had discussed recent developments in the talks and how to add further momentum. Both agreed that it was important to put in place, confidence building measures.

The spokesman concluded by saying: “The Secretary-General stressed his continued personal attention and the United Nations’ commitment to assisting the sides in reaching a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus”.

Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot Foreign Minister, Ozdil Nami said yesterday, that the negotiation process needed to speed up and that a once weekly meeting was inadequate.
