Ban Ki-moon telephones both leaders on Saturday

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, held separate telephone conversations with both community leaders on Saturday to discuss the ongoing Cyprus negotiations.

Ban talked to President Mustafa Akinci in the afternoon and expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the talks. He pledged his continuing support at the highest level, for the negotiations.

Akinci thanked Ban for his close interest and explained his position in the talks.

Both men said that the goal was to find a solution by the end of 2016.

Later on Saturday evening, Ban also spoke with President Nicos Anastasiades. Again, the UN Secretary-General expressed his support and said that he was ready to assist.

Anastasiades expressed the need for all parties involved, through specific actions, to work to create the right conditions to allow the negotiations to progress.
