The Bar Association made a statement regarding the crisis in the Parliament over the election of the Speaker. In the statement, they stated that the situation becoming an unsolvable crisis, and expecting a solution from lawyers or the Attorney General, is equally concerning, Yeniduzen reports. They warned that when politics fails to resolve its own issues and looks to the law or the judiciary for solutions, it can lead to dangerous consequences, similar to political interference in the judiciary, and this should be strictly avoided.
The statement continued:
“We are watching the developments in the 2nd Parliamentary Speaker election with concern. The fact that the issue has reached a point where the Constitution and the Parliamentary Rules need to be interpreted by lawyers or the Attorney General only increases our worries. While every legal text can be interpreted by law, it must not be forgotten that the election of the Speaker is a deeply political issue. Political matters should be resolved by politics. Politics must find its own solutions to this crisis. This is not only essential to preserving the remaining credibility of politics but also to protecting the principle of separation of powers, which is fundamental to our state and democracy.
“The situation where the Speaker election turns into an unsolvable crisis and the solution is sought from lawyers or the Attorney General is deeply concerning. When politics cannot solve its own basic issues and seeks help from the law or judiciary, it is as dangerous as political interference in the judiciary, and it must be strictly avoided.
“If the boundaries between the legislative, judicial, and executive branches, which form the essence of the separation of powers, are not carefully and sensitively maintained by all parties, neither the organs created by the Constitution nor democracy will survive“.
