Following reports yesterday that two lawyers were detained after a lengthy argument with the police while visiting their clients at Nicosia Police station; there was a major protest by the Bar Association in front of Nicosia Police station. During this protest both lawyers entered the station and formally complained to the police against their treatment.
The head of the Bar Association, Unver Bedevi gave a speech in front of police HQ saying that this issue was important not only for lawyers but all citizens. Mr Bedevi said that in a democracy, all citizens had the right to a self-defence in the shortest possible time. Those two lawyers were there for their clients and that there would be a civil case made against the police.
He also said that his association would work for the right of lawyers to visit their clients outside normal working hours.
