Bereaved Families to Attend Fourth Hearing

Families of Champion Angels at airport

The families’ quest for justice for the Champion Angels has begun as they make their way to Adıyaman, BRTK reported.

A group of around 100 people, including the families of the Champion Angels, [Famagusta school children who died in the February 6 earthquake* in Adıyaman in 2023], government ministers, politicians, members of the Bar Association, and journalists, departed from Ercan International Airport this morning. Their destination is Adıyaman, travelling via Gaziantep, for the fourth hearing of the İsias Hotel case, which will be held tomorrow at the Adıyaman 3rd High Criminal Court.

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel and Tufan Erhürman, leader of the Republican Turkish Party, will also be in Adıyaman later this evening.

Upon arrival, the Association for Keeping the Champion Angels Alive plans to visit Adıyaman Merkez Vatan Primary School, where they will donate books.

The school’s new technology classroom, funded by donations from a charity night organised by the Ataköy Folk Dances Sports Club in Istanbul and led by Fehmi Turgay, has been named in honour of the Champion Angels.

*The earthquake which took place on 6 February 2023 was a devastating event, with two powerful earthquakes striking southern and central Turkey and northern Syria. The first quake had a magnitude of 7.8, followed by a second major tremor of 7.5 a few hours later. These earthquakes caused widespread destruction, with thousands of buildings collapsing, including the İsias Hotel in Adıyaman, where  lives were lost, including members of the Champion Angels sports team. The earthquakes led to a significant loss of life and displaced millions across the affected regions. [Ed.]
