Arrangements are being made for a bi-communal medical mission, comprising both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot doctors, to travel to Gaza to help the Palestinian people, Cypriot MEP Eleni Theocharous has told CNA, ‘Famagusta Gazette’ reports.
This is the first time Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot doctors have organised to work together in such a mission.
Today, Eleni Theocharous together with Turkish Cypriot activist Deniz Birinci met the Ambassador of Palestine in Cyprus and expressed their sympathy for the Palestinian people.
Theocharous said that it was the first time that Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot activists have made a joint effort to help the people of Gaza.
“Our action is purely humanitarian and has no political dimension. The people of Gaza are not responsible for the suffering that the extreme Islamist group Hamas and Israel’s excessive reaction have caused”, she added.
The people, Theocharous said, are helpless and Cypriot medics will attempt to go to Gaza to take much needed drugs and medical supplies.
Volunteer doctors have asked, on previous occasions, to travel to Gaza before Israel launched its land attacks, however, they were denied permission.
Theocharous told CNA that in the past, efforts have been made to have joint humanitarian missions with Turkish Cypriot doctors with no success. “It seems that this mission at least as regards Cyprus will take place,” she added.
