Biden meets with Eroglu in Nicosia

US Vice President Joe Biden met with TRNC President Derviş Eroğlu on Thursday in one of Eroğlu’s offices in north Nicosia. The meeting was historically unique, as the TRNC is not officially recognised by the US administration, Turkish daily ‘Zaman’ reports.

Prior to the meeting, Biden had also met with Greek Cypriot President Anastasiades in the South.

The most senior US official to visit the island since then-US Vice President Lyndon Johnson’s visit in 1962, Biden arrived in Cyprus on Wednesday.

After meeting with Eroğlu in Nicosia for around an hour, Biden shook Eroğlu’s hand in front of the building and left without making any comment to the press.

Speaking to journalists at Larnaca International Airport upon arrival in Cyprus on 21st May, Biden said, “The United States — I want to be clear about this — recognises only one legitimate government of the Republic of Cyprus, and my visit and meetings throughout the island will not change that.”
