Boat to be scuppered to create artificial reef

The first vessel to be deliberately scuppered off the western coast of Cyprus to create an artificial reef will be sunk this morning, ‘Famagusta Gazete’ reports.

The public can watch the event at 11:00 at Yeroskipou beach in front of the restaurant Atlantis.

The “Laboe” has been cleaned up according to the UN Environment Programme Mediterranean Action Plan guidelines.

In December, the 57-year old NEMESIS III (above) was scuppered off the coast of Protaras in Cyprus.

The government says that the new reefs have the same characteristics as natural reefs and act as nursery grounds by providing space for reproduction, growth,.

The project is co-funded by 50% from the EU and 50% of the Republic of Cyprus.
