Body Found in Kyrenia Harbour – Murder Suspected

The recovery of the body of a young man from the Kyrenia old harbour breakwater has initiated a murder investigation.

On Friday morning, rough seas led to the suspension of rescue attempts of 25-year-old Halil Karakız who fell off the breakwater into the water. Later on in the day, his body was discovered trapped in the breakwater on Kordonboyu in Kyrenia and sent to Nicosia State Hospital. His body had been badly battered by the waves against the rocks.

The results of the autopsy carried out at the hospital showed that: “Skull abrasion and brain haemorrhage are suspected to be due to a blow to the head with a hard object”.

Karakız’s companion, 20-year-old 20-year-old Arif Gökçek, who had been slightly injured on the rocks, was arrested on discovery of the body.

Reportedly both men had been drinking.

It was learned that Karakız, who recently had entered the country as a tourist, had problems with his family. Karakız’s father came to the island yesterday morning. He later identified his son’s body.

Murder suspect Arif Gökçek was taken to Kyrenia District Court today. He pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and has been remanded in custody for three days.

The police investigation continues.
