Mersin Coast Guard stopped and boarded a vessel bound from Tasucu to the TRNC yesterday afternoon. A container was opened and found to contain Kalashnikov rifles and 21 thousand Kalashnikov bullets.
The boat had originally embarked from Iran and it is claimed to be owned by a firm called Maritime Tourism. This company along with Akgunler Tourism and Acapulco Holiday Village is owned by well-known TRNC businessman Unal Caginer.
This is breaking news but there is already a theory that the weapons were to be smuggled to South Cyprus.
There has been an arrest and the boat has been confiscated. No statements from the TRNC authorities or Akgunler management have been made, so far.
