Bullets exploding caused fire at Kalkanli

Exploding bullets on a nearby firing range are said to have been the cause of a fire in the forested area near Kalkanli.

The fire brigade, forest department and civil defence teams had to wait for a while before tackling the blaze because of the fear of further explosions from the firing range.

Fire fighting aircraft were deployed by the British bases and Turkey, which eventually managed to extinguish the fire which according to Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Diyalog’ has destroyed over 3,000 donums of land.

The paper reports that President Mustafa Akinci had called from Switzerland and said that if needed he could ask for help from the Greek Cypriot side but the director of the forest department, Alay Firat told him that “Turkey came to help us, the help of the Greek Cypriots is not needed Mr President”.
