Call for referendum if no solution: Eroglu

President Dervis Eroglu who is standing for re-election on 19th April was on the campaign trail in Kyrenia yesterday.

He was speaking to local shopkeepers and told them that he was working to ensure that Turkish Cypriots could live in freedom and prosperity.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, he said that this was the last chance for a settlement. He warned that if there was no solution this time, then they would be “drawing their own path with the public.”

He added that, as the UN Secretary General has said, this is the end game.

If the Greek Cypriots continued to be insincere towards the Turkish Cypriots, then this whole issue could be put to a public referendum as to what should be the next steps, Eroglu said.

He emphasised that there needed to be a time frame placed on the negotiations, which would then reveal how sincere the Greek Cypriots leader’s intentions were.
