Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Kudret Ozersay has said that a reference to the natural gas in Eastern Mediterranean was made in the UN Secretary-General’s report on Cyprus. The sincerity of the international community on the issue of cooperation in the region will be seen in the days to come.
Addressing the opening ceremony of a symposium at the University of Ankara titled “Law and Politics in Eastern Mediterranean”, Ozersay said that the Turkish Cypriots want the island’s natural wealth to be used in cooperation, in a manner which will create full interdependence.
He said the following:
“[…] The ideal thing would be for this to happen within the framework of the overall solution. However, if a comprehensive solution is not reached after 50 years or if it delays, the sides should obtain it [the natural wealth] without waiting for the solution. The thing which will abolish instability, which will reduce the danger of conflict in the region, is full economic cooperation and interdependence. And a dialogue and a vision is undoubtedly needed for this. I believe that within the forthcoming period we will be able to achieve this all together and especially with Turkey”.
