Calls for government to resign over Ercan contract debacle

An urgent investigation should be launched regarding the corruption allegations and decisions that were taken regarding the extension of T&T’s contract to manage Ercan airport, leader of the Social Democracy Party (TDP) Cemal Ozyigit has said.

T&T is the Turkish company that signed a contract with the UBP government in December 2012 to extend and manage Ercan airport for 25 years, using the build-operate-transfer model. Progress on the airport extension has been subject to delays and one major criticism of the original contract was that T&T were not obliged to supply any schedule for the work. (Ed).

The decision by the council of ministers to extend the Ercan contract by four more years is a new scandal in a series of scandals, Ozyigit said. Elsewhere he had said that the reason that the council of ministers agreed to a four year extension, was that the company was suing the government for 93 million TL on the grounds that it had not been given access to the land to begin construction work, within the agreed time period. It had agreed to withdraw the case provided an extension to the contract was given.

Deputy leader of the Revival Party (YDP) Sunalp Dervis Sencer has demanded Ertugruloglu’s resignation since he was the transport minister at the time the agreement was signed.

‘Havadis; reports that the deputy leader of the Communal Liberation Party New Forces (TKP) Tozun Tunali has demanded the resignation of the coalition government and added: “The people do not want even to look at you any more. We are tired and have had enough of you. Resign before the assembly closes for holidays”.

Meanwhile, independent deputy Hasan Tacoy, argued that he cannot tell who is lying and who is telling the truth. He added that the prime minister should act, otherwise he will be exposed.
