CAS Employees Begin Day Three of Hunger Strike

North Cyprus News - CAs Workers - Hunger StrikeFormer employees of Cyprus Airport Services (CAS) employees begun a hunger strike on 20 December. The date marks when the 13th salary is paid to civil servants.

In July, CAS laid off 133 workers after AtlasGlobal Airlines, the only users of CAS, ceased their flights to Ercan. This month, Nicosia Accident Court decided to liquidate the company.

Speaking on behalf of the redundant CAS employees, Erkut Öznergiz outlined the events that led up to the hunger strike. He said that compensation of six months salary owed to the laid-off workers had not been paid.

We want this right. We want employees’ rights to be recognised in other institutions and organisations that are failing.

He said that for the time being, there were 30 people on hunger strike, but this number will increase with each passing day, he added.

Meanwhile, one of the hunger strikers fell ill and was taken to hospital.
