Speaking on Bayrak television, the Director of Geology and Mining, Mustafa Alkaravli said that the pipeline infrastructure for the ‘Century Project’ will be completed within three years. However, he warned that the water should be used with care.
The project is designed to pipe water from Alakopru Dam in Anamur, Mersin district, via undersea pipes to Gecitkoy Dam. Construction on both dams are nearing completion and Nicosia will be the first community to benefit from the water.
Critics from ‘green’ organisations say that the water bounty will do nothing to encourage conservation of water and prefer the desalination option. Five desalination plants exist in the South.
