General Secretary of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Asım Akansoy, has criticised recent statements regarding properties owned by Greek Cypriots in North Cyprus, Yeniduzen reports.

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel was quoted as saying, inter alia, that the recent targeting of individuals by the South Cyprus administration over property issues has become a human rights violation, assuring that “all titles are guaranteed by the state according to the Constitution“.

These statements included messages like “walk on, don’t be afraid” and claims that “title deeds are guaranteed by the TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus)“. Akansoy expressed strong objections, stating on his personal social media account, “No state, whether recognising or not recognising the TRNC, can guarantee Greek Cypriot properties in the north“.

He pointed out that despite calls from the UBP – YDP – DP coalition government to “act with common sense”, he believes their foundation is unstable. He argued, “Moving away from the path to a solution on this unstable ground not only harms Turkish Cypriots and investors in the TRNC, but will continue to do so. The parameters for a solution are clear”.

Akansoy expressed his regret saying that,  “Unfortunately, creating a new environment of unity and trust through shared decision-making within our own community seems impossible“, He referred to former President Talat’s warning about shifting away from global involvement and focusing on rebuilding politics around the solution to the Cyprus issue. This warning was countered by accusations from Erhan Arıklı against the romantic Federalists.

He criticised the political approach of President Tatar and Prime Minister Üstel, accusing them of ignoring values and assessments, which he believes has endangered investors. He added, “Statements like ‘walk on, don’t be afraid, I’ve got your back’ alongside claims that title deeds for Greek Cypriot properties in northern Cyprus are guaranteed by the TRNC state, sadly appear futile“.

Akansoy clarified that if this were true, the Immovable Property Commission (IPC) would not have been established. He emphasised that the purpose of the Immovable Property Law is to resolve property issues in accordance with European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decisions until a comprehensive solution is reached.
