Two fountains built in memory of the Champion Angels [the Famagusta school children who died in the Isias Hotel during an earthquake in Adıyaman, Turkey in February 2023] were inaugurated at Kantara Square, BRTK reported.

The ceremony was attended by Green Pedal members, the Minister of Economy and Energy Olgun Amcaoğlu, and members of the Association for the Survival of Champion Angels.

The event, which was emotional, began with a moment of silence. Green Pedal Sports Club President Erhan Volkan spoke first, calling the earthquake which reduced the Isias Hotel to rubble, a murder, holding both the person who approved the hotel and those who ignored safety concerns responsible. Volkan noted that the Forestry Department provided the land for the fountains, which will serve as a lasting tribute to the victims.

Ruşen Yücesoylu Karakaya, President of the Association for Keeping Champion Angels Alive, said the children lost their lives in Adıyaman while pursuing their love for sports and representing their country. She vowed to seek justice and ensure those responsible are punished. Karakaya emphasised the importance of continued support for their cause, saying that “every drop of water from this fountain symbolises their pure souls”.

The ceremony concluded with the reading of a message from Iskele Mayor Hasan Sadıkoğlu, followed by the release of balloons to mark the opening of the fountains.
