The Ministry of Environment, which has made a study of introducing payment for the use of plastic bags used in markets, has said charges will be implemented on 1 December 2018. The idea being to produce less plastic waste and have a cleaner environment.
Some markets have already added barcodes to their plastic bags.
Minister of Tourism and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu stated that their targets were to come in line with EU standards concerning payment for plastic bags. The aim is to reduce the amount of bags used by between 65-85 per cent. Some shops have already begun the trial phase, he said.
So in order to encourage shoppers to reuse plastic bags or bring their own shopping bags, a charge between 20-25 kuruş has been suggested by the government as companies begin barcoding in advance of pending legislation.
