Cheese company damaging environment in Guzelyurt

A cheese production company has been accused of dumping whey, the bi-product of producing hellim, into fields and damaging the environment.

Although the company has been fined by the Turkish Cypriot Environmental Protection Office, the company continues to dump around 80 tons of waste into fields and streams in the Guzelyurt region.

The whey creates a foul odour and is said to be destroying vegetation, which is then unable to regrow.

The environmental protection office has said that fines have not been a sufficient deterrent and are now looking to higher authorities to take more stringent action.
