Christofias says goodbye

Presidential elections are underway in the RoC today and the current President, Demetris Christofias who has held office since 2008, did not put himself forward as a candidate.

In his farewell speech, he urged the Turkish Cypriots to end the occupation. He said that he had failed in his vision but that his conscience is clear because he had done all he could to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem. He then blamed Turkey for preventing the reaching of a conclusion based on UN resolutions.

He maintains that Turkey is unconvincing in its efforts and that he had made good progress in negotiations with the previous TRNC leader, Mehmet Talat.
