The Trade Union Congress has declared a one day strike in support of the Nicosia Council Workers union BES. However the Government, using its constitutional powers, has deferred the strike in relation to civil aviation activity by 60 days.
The Trade Union support, declared last night was a reaction to the arrests of BES management. There was also a major march against the police headquarters in Nicosia last night. Today there will be a demonstration outside Nicosia Council headquarters, starting at 11am.
The Minister of Transport, Ersan Saner, said that the strike delay had been ordered because of the potential damage to the TRNC economy and also not to inconvenience tourists flying to and from Cyprus for the New Year.
