Billowing black clouds of smoke rose from an industrial estate in the North Nicosia suburb of Haspolat today.
Fire blazed from a huge pile of waste material, the bulk of which was made up of old tyres. A column of black smoke was visible from the capital.
The intense heat caused an explosion which set fire to an electricity pole nearby, prompting Kib-Tek to cut power to the local area.
Fireman fought the blaze and the police will now try to determine the cause of the fire.
