Concerns Over Building Boom in Lefke

Gaziveren. - Apartments

The buzz of construction in the Gaziveren region, adjacent to Lefke, is hard to miss; towering construction projects line the coastline, heralding a surge in development. Representatives from local civil society organisations, speaking to Yeniduzen paint a vivid picture: “It’s like another Iskele is springing up in Lefke“.

Münevver Ebedi Çakmak, head of the Lefke Environmental and Promotion Association, sounds the alarm on the Lefke Master Plan, stressing that its delayed enforcement for two years has only compounded existing issues.

We’re not against progress“, says Çakmak, “but it has to be smart and sustainable“. She warns that the current wave of investments in the region threatens its future.

Former head of the same association, Ahmet Hızlı, raises critical questions about the infrastructure along the seaside. He doubts whether the area’s current infrastructure can handle the influx of development and raises concerns about the environmental impact of sewage disposal into the sea.

Adding to the chorus, Aziz Kaya, Mayor of Lefke, acknowledges the infrastructure challenges amidst the construction frenzy. He emphasises the importance of proper oversight and adherence to project plans. Kaya reveals the frustration of waiting two years for approval of the Lefke Master Plan, which, if in effect, would have guided the current construction differently.

It’s been ready for ages”, said Kaya. “If only the Master Plan were in place, we’d be building with a clear roadmap. Instead, we’re navigating through murky waters under outdated regulations“.
