Concerns raised over tourist numbers to North Cyprus

Issues of tourist numbers to the TRNC were addressed during the “29th General meeting of the Turkish Cypriot Tourism and Travel Agencies”.

Prime Minister Omer Kalyoncu addressed the meeting, saying that necessary steps had to be taken to revive the tourism market in the UK. Advertising alone, was not enough to attract tourists, he said. He added that the solution to the Cyprus problem would have a positive effect on tourism.

Also present at the meeting, chairman of the Democratic Party (DP) Serdar Denktas stated that the Russia-Turkey crisis is affecting the number of Russian tourists who visit the TRNC. He added that despite the fact that the decision taken by President Akinci not to meet with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the UN buffer zone, when the latter visited Cyprus was politically right, financially it was unwise. He also said that measures must be taken on the issue of Russian tourists, to encourage them to visit North Cyprus.
