Health Minister Hakan Dinçyürek has announced that six infants receiving care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Emergency Hospital in Nicosia have been weaned off ventilators and are now able to breathe independently. Speaking to BRT, Dinçyürek explained that following this unfortunate incident, the babies’ conditions first stabilised and they have since begun a recovery process.

He clarified, however, that this does not signify the end of their treatment. Expressing optimism about the progress seen, Dinçyürek said, “We hope to return our babies to their mothers soon“. He highlighted that the babies’ ability to breathe unaided marks a significant improvement and assured that further updates on their condition will be provided.

Yesterday it was reported that five heath care workers were arrested following the death of a 20-day-old baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Emergency Hospital.

They appeared in court yesterday on charges of “Negligence”. At court, the police disclosed that the investigation began after the baby unexpectedly fell ill and subsequently passed away in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
