Confrontation benefits no one: Akinci

President Mustafa Akinci responded to President Nicos Anastasiades’ comment that he will take part in the Geneva summit in his capacity as Greek Cypriot leader and head of the Cyprus Republic by saying that “….how this (the Geneva summit) will be done is written in the text of the agreement. And the UN announced this. So to create confrontation around this topic is not to the benefit of anyone, however we cannot silence anyone. Anybody can say what they want. We will give our answer accordingly.

On Wednesday, Anastasiades had responded to a reporter’s question by saying that he would be present in his capacity as both President of the Republic and representative of the Greek Cypriot community.

However, President Akinci’s statement implied that that Anastasiades will attend the Geneva Summit solely as the representative of the Greek Cypriot community.

A meeting scheduled for Saturday between the two community leaders has been cancelled, Akinci said. Instead, they will both meet on Sunday evening, in the presence of UN Special Advisor on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide in Geneva.
