A 42-year-old man sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his pregnant partner and child in 2011, escaped by jumping from the window of a house in Paphos where he had gone to visit relatives, under police escort, Yeniduzen reports. The South Cyprus police are on alert after 42-year-old Theodoros Theofanous, made his escape.

According to Greek Cypriot press reports, prisoner Theodoros Theofanous escaped while on leave to visit relatives in the village of Choletria in Paphos, accompanied by police. Theofanous, who was accompanied by three members of the Mobile Emergency Action Unit (MMAD) and four prison officers, escaped through the window of the house he was visiting.

He was convicted of murdering his pregnant partner Yulia Oporok, 24, and her three-year-old daughter Viktoria. The murder, which caused outrage in southern Cyprus, took place in December 2011, and he was jailed in 2012.

The report stated that the South Cyprus police were on the alert for Theofanous, who had escaped, and that the police had launched extensive field search operations with helicopter and drone support, and four teams from the prison and Paphos police with trained dogs. The police have also considered the possibility that he may try to cross the border into North Cyprus to evade capture.

It was also noted that due to the seriousness of the incident, the guards responsible for escorting Theofanous are expected to be suspended.
