CTP Chairman Tufan Erhürman welcomed the Chairman of the Turkish Republican Party (CHP) Özgür Özel and his delegation at the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) headquarters. The reception included CTP Secretary General Asım Akansoy and MYK Members Fikri Toros, Sıla Usar İncirli, Doğuş Derya, and Fazilet Özdenefe, Yeniduzen reports. Following their meeting, Erhürman and Özel held a joint press conference, underscoring the importance of “dialogue” and “peace“.

Support for a Federal Solution

CTP Chairman Tufan Erhürman highlighted the ongoing struggle for existence by the Turkish Cypriot people, stating that a bi-communal, bi-regional federal solution based on political equality is the only realistic resolution to the Cyprus issue. He stressed that the CTP, with its historical knowledge, continually learns from past experiences to support this goal.

Özgür Özel, CHP Chairman, pledged to discuss the issue of Turkish Cypriots being denied entry to Turkey with President Erdoğan, expressing that this situation is unjust. He also invited Erdoğan to engage in dialogue with the CTP.

Historical Struggles of Turkish Cypriots

Erhürman emphasised the resilience of the Turkish Cypriot people since 1878, through the British colonial period, and the conflicts from 1960-1974. He noted that July 20 is a significant date, marking the Turkish Cypriot people’s heightened concerns about their existence following a fascist coup on July 15.

Erhürman underscored that the struggle for existence continues under difficult conditions, highlighting issues such as population problems and the lack of a coherent population policy. He also pointed out the unpredictability of the property regime in Northern Cyprus, attributing it to the Greek Cypriot leadership’s manipulation of law and property as political tools.

A Clear Stance on the Cyprus Problem

Erhürman reiterated the CTP’s firm stance on resolving the Cyprus problem through a bi-communal, bi-regional federal solution based on political equality. He stressed that political equality must be a precondition for any negotiations, and the The CTP is committed to a solution-focused dialogue rather than prolonged, unproductive talks.

He also stated that the CTP will not accept a return to the status quo if the Greek Cypriot leadership withdraws from negotiations. The CTP is dedicated to maintaining a constructive relationship with Turkey, advocating for solutions, peace, and dialogue.
