In a press statement made in Parliament, the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Tufan Erhürman, stressed that the official gazette notice regarding Ziya Öztürkler’s appointment as Speaker of Parliament is null and void, Kibris Postasi reports.

Erhürman made it clear that the CTP does not recognise Öztürkler’s role as Speaker, stating, “If this continues, it amounts to a coup against Parliament“.

He also declared that the handover ceremony scheduled for today holds no legitimacy, saying, “What is happening here is a coup against Parliament“.

Erhürman explained that three legal experts within Parliament had been consulted on the parliamentary issues, pointing out that they are the most authoritative voices on the matter. “On 22 October, legal advice was sought from these experts, and all three confirmed that the ballot papers were ‘invalid’“, he said.

Highlighting the clear legal violations in the parliamentary speaker election, Erhürman questioned, “Should MPs simply accept these breaches of the law and carry on as if nothing has happened?

Erhürman also pointed out that, legally, the election for Speaker has not yet been completed, and that Zorlu Töre remains in his position both in practice and by law.

Emphasising that the country has only one Parliament and it must be defended, Erhürman added, “There is no other Parliament“.

In a separate post published today, Kibris Postasi reported that National Unity Party MP for Güzelyurt Ziya Ozturkler, had taken over from Zorlu Töre as Speaker of Parliament.

Speaking at the handover ceremony former Speaker Zorlu Töre wished success to Ziya Öztürkler .

Töre said that the main thing is to serve the people, that he will continue to serve as a member of parliament from now on, and that positions come and go.
