A protest march was organised by the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) in Güzelyurt to raise awareness about the hazards to pedestrians and motorists from poorly lit streets, Yeniduzen reported.
Supporters of the CTP gathered at the Akçay-Güzelyurt roundabout at the entrance of the town, carrying lanterns and banners as they marched towards the new Güzelyurt Municipality building. During the protest, they chanted slogans like “We don’t want to be left in the dark,” “End the Darkness,” and “The UBP will go, the darkness will end.” CTP members of the Assembly Fazilet Özdenefe and Ürün Solyalı also participated in the demonstration.
Chair of the CTP Güzelyurt District Çağlar Gulamkadir, spoke at the event, highlighting that the people of Güzelyurt have been forced to endure dark roads for years, leading to accidents and fatalities. He criticised the UBP-DP-YDP government for creating traffic chaos and failing to address the ongoing issues, particularly in areas heavily populated by residents, students, and workers. Gulamkadir emphasised that despite repeated warnings, the government has not provided any solutions, adding, “Their concern is not about governing the country or protecting lives“.
He continued, “We are steadily walking in darkness and travelling on dark roads. The local government and those claiming to run the country keep passing the responsibility back and forth. We don’t care about their power struggles. We want solutions. But we know that expecting anything from them is futile. That’s why we say, ‘We will solve this.’ We will work hand in hand with the people to bring the Turkish Cypriot community into a better, more prosperous era. Through this protest, we wanted to underline this point once again. We don’t deserve these dark roads, and we don’t want to travel in darkness. You, on the other hand, are failing to manage and bring light to these issues. Step down and let us fix it. We will turn the darkness into light“.
