The Cyprus Anti-nuclear Platform will hold a press conference at the ‘Home for Cooperation’ today, to mark the anniversary of the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima plant, after the devastating earthquake of 11th March, 2011.
The platform is composed of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot environmental organisations, NGOs and political parties.
The group opposes against the construction of a nuclear plant at Akkuyu in the Mersin district of Turkey.
They say “the various examples of nuclear accidents have shown the possible risks our country will be facing in case a nuclear plant is constructed in Turkey.”
During the press conference the Platform will state its positions on nuclear plants and further scheduled actions. Its aim is to prevent Turkey constructing a nuclear plant at Akkuyu and the building of any other similar facilities in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Preparations of the building site at Akkuyu have already begun, as shown in the picture above.
