Cyprus Negotiations Must be Between Equal States

Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu has said that the United Nations has robbed Turkish Cypriots of 50 years.

Speaking during a visit paid to him by a delegation from the Turkish Journalists’ Federation, Ertuğruloğlu said that the Cyprus Issue was going through a sensitive stage.

Reminding that the Cyprus talks in Switzerland had failed, he said that the Greek Cypriot side, in an attempt to avoid being blamed by the international community for the failure, was insisting that what had collapsed was not the 50 year long Cyprus negotiations process but only a conference.

Pointing out that the Greek Cypriot officials were repeatedly stating the talks will continue once the elections in the South are over, Ertuğruloğlu said “the United Nations has robbed Turkish Cypriots of 50 years with these talks. But we shall not let them do so after this. Any talks to be held from this point onwards can only be between two states. We want the Turkish media’s support on this issue”.

The TRNC Foreign Minister also underlined the need to evaluate and assess with Turkey how the process will be shaped once the general elections are held in the TRNC on 7 January.
